In one sentence: alprazolam boosts the effect of GABA, the brain’s main “calm down” signal, which reduces the runaway nerve activity behind anxiety and panic.
Under normal conditions, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) binds to receptors on nerve cells and tells them to slow down. During a panic attack, that braking system is essentially overwhelmed by other signals — which is why the body reacts as if there’s real danger.
Alprazolam attaches to a specific site on the GABA-A receptor and makes GABA’s calming effect stronger than it would be on its own. It doesn’t add a new chemical the brain doesn’t already use — it amplifies a signal that’s already there.
